(No. 340 - October 19, 2010 - 10:30 a.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Franco Frattini, Foreign Minister of Italy, yesterday held a productive meeting in Rome on a range of bilateral and multilateral cooperation issues, underlining the ongoing, close, broadly based partnership between the two countries.
The ministers exchanged instruments of ratification for the updated Treaty Between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Italian Republic Concerning Extradition, an important tool for further strengthening mutual cooperation on law and order issues. The ministers discussed ways to deepen bilateral investment and economic cooperation, including the Canada-EU comprehensive economic and trade agreement, now in its fifth round of negotiations. They also discussed youth mobility, academic exchanges, and science and technology cooperation.
The ministers also addressed a number of international issues, including Afghanistan and its neighbouring states, UN reform, the Arctic, NATO and Iran. The ministers reaffirmed their call for the immediate release by the Iranian authorities of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.
