(No. 348 - October 29, 2010 - 3:40 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the death of the ruler of the Emirate of Ra’s al-Khaimah, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, and the succession by his son, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi:
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing, after several months of illness, of Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, ruler of the Emirate of Ra’s al-Khaimah and a member of the Federal Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere condolences to his family, to the Supreme Council and to the people of the Emirate of Ra’s al-Khaimah. Canada stands with the UAE in this time of national mourning.
“I would also like to extend my best wishes to Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, who succeeds his father as ruler of Ra’s al-Khaimah.”
