Canada Welcomes Latest Steps Toward Serbia-Croatia Reconciliation

(No. 355 - November 8, 2010 - 2:45 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement in support of the Serbia-Croatia reconciliation initiative:

“Canada is strongly encouraged by the visit of Serbia’s President Boris Tadic to the Vukovar region of Croatia. This trip is an important gesture of reconciliation for both countries. Visiting with the official invitation of Croatia’s President Ivo Josipovic, President Tadic is the first ranking Serbian official to visit Vukovar, an area heavily damaged during the Balkan conflict.

“This visit is demonstrative of the ongoing efforts by countries in southeastern Europe to improve relations and come to terms with the terrible events of the early 1990s. The symbolic gesture of offering a formal apology by both sides is an important step toward regional reconciliation, improving bilateral ties and promoting peace and stability in the region.

“It is important that the international community recognize this and welcome this gesture, which supports global cooperation and stability in the Balkans and all of Europe.”
