Canada Concerned with Developments in Haiti as Election Results are Released

(No. 386 - December 8, 2010 - 1 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement following the release of results from Haiti’s November 28 presidential elections by the country’s Provisional Electoral Council:

“Canada is concerned with the events taking place following the release of provisional results of the election in Haiti.

“We continue to monitor developments closely and urge all political actors to address irregularities in accordance with Haitian electoral law.

“We also urge political actors to fulfill their responsibilities in the interest of the population, and demonstrate a firm commitment to peace, democratic principles and the integrity of the electoral process.

“Canada calls on all political actors to prioritize peace and the interests of the population, as well as to renew calls for restraint.”
