Canada Condemns Bombing at Religious Ceremony in Iran

(No. 399 – December 15, 2010 – 6:50 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement condemning this morning’s bombing at a religious ceremony in Chabahar, Iran, during the lead-up to the annual Ashura commemoration:

“Canada strongly condemns the deadly suicide bombing this morning in Chabahar.

“I am deeply saddened by this violent and deplorable attack. On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those killed in the attack, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. Our thoughts are with the Iranian people.

“The targeting of a religious ceremony near the Imam Hossein Mosque during the lead-up to Ashura, an annual time of mourning, is a cowardly and immoral act. Canada hopes that the perpetrators of this deplorable act will be brought to justice.”
