Canada Congratulates Iraq on Forming of New Government

(No. 406 - December 21, 2010 - 8:35 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement congratulating Iraq on the formation of a new government:

“Canada welcomes the formation of a new government in Iraq and extends congratulations to President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Speaker of the Council of Representatives Usama al-Nujayfi, as well as Iyad Allawi, who will head the new national strategic policy council.

“Earlier this year, the people of Iraq demonstrated their courage and their commitment to democracy as they exercised their fundamental right to vote. With the establishment of a new government, Iraq’s elected leaders can continue working to provide stability and opportunity for all of its people and ensure the protection of its minorities, including Christians.

“Canada stands firmly with Iraq’s people and government as they work together to establish peace, democracy and the rule of law.”
