Canada Welcomes Ratification of New U.S.-Russia Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

(No. 407 - December 22, 2010 - 10:30 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement welcoming the ratification by the United States Senate of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between the United States and Russia:

“Canada welcomes the ratification of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty by the U.S. Senate, and looks forward to its impending ratification by the State Duma of Russia. The ratification of this treaty by both states demonstrates the continued commitment of the parties to enhancing global security. It will also help advance weapons of mass destruction threat-reduction projects on which Canada collaborates with Russia and the United States, particularly through our Global Partnership Program.

“Lowering the number of strategically deployed nuclear weapons by 30 percent and removing a number of delivery systems from service in a verifiable manner is a major advance for nuclear disarmament. It further fulfills international commitments of the parties in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.”
