Canada Concerned About Situation in Tunisia

(No. 18 - January 12, 2011 - 1:40 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the situation in Tunisia:

"Canada is concerned by the deterioration of peaceful demonstrations in Tunisia into widespread violence. We are particularly concerned by reports of violence during public rallies, where many people have died, others have been wounded and a large number have been arrested.

"Canada urges the Tunisian authorities to restrain their security forces and to engage in an open dialogue with civil society to seek solutions to the social and economic problems the country is facing.

"Canada believes that respect for human rights and democracy are necessary to ensure peace, prosperity and security in Tunisia."
