Canada Condemns Bombings in Iraq

(No. 29 – January 19, 2011 – 6:10 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement condemning two suicide bombing attacks on security forces in Iraq:

"Canada strongly condemns the deadly suicide bombings that took place yesterday and today in Iraq, targeting police recruits in Tikrit and a police compound in Baqouba.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those killed in these cowardly attacks, and wish a quick recovery to the injured. Our thoughts are with the Iraqi people.

"These attacks are a deplorable attempt by extremists to destabilize Iraq's efforts to establish security and the rule of law. Canada hopes that the perpetrators of these despicable acts will be brought to justice."
