Statement by Minister Cannon on Haitian Election Results

(No. 51 - February 3, 2011 - 5 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the announcement of the results of the first round of elections in Haiti:

"Canada welcomes the announcement by Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council of the final results of the first round of presidential and legislative elections. These results are a positive step forward in the election of a credible, new government.

"Canada expects all parties to ensure the future integrity of the electoral process and to work together to build a national consensus for the reconstruction of the country at this important juncture.

"Canada reiterates its call for Haiti';s political leaders to fulfill their democratic obligations. They must work to ensure that the electoral process continues so that the transition to a new administration can be completed as soon as possible. In order to strengthen democracy in Haiti, it is imperative that the process and the results be credible and transparent.

"The international community alone cannot rebuild Haiti. As Canada has consistently stated time and again, political stability can only be achieved by Haitians themselves through the democratic election of an efficient, honest and responsible government to lead the people through the next critical stage of recovery and reconstruction."
