Canada Marks 25th Anniversary of Philippines Revolution

(No. 84 – February 25, 2011 – 2:40 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement marking the 25th anniversary of the successful conclusion of the Philippines’ 1986 People Power Revolution:

"Canada salutes the citizens of the Philippines, who, 25 years ago today, peacefully ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Their People Power Revolution toppled the Marcos regime through mass demonstrations. Without violence, the country was returned to democracy.

"Two million citizens took to the streets during those historic days, in a courageous stand for freedom and democracy. Canada supports the right of all people to express their opinions freely and without fear of violence or persecution."
