Minister Cannon to Attend G-8 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France

(No. 96 - March 10, 2011 - 1 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will attend the G-8 foreign ministers’ meeting in Paris on March 14 and 15, 2011.

"In light of the recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa, the G-8 ministers will focus their discussion on the situation in that region, and I am committed to working with my G-8 counterparts on a comprehensive response to the situation," said Minister Cannon. "We must assist those in need of immediate humanitarian assistance and provide support for democratic transition and economic reforms to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

"This G-8 meeting will allow us to work together on a further coordinated international response to the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. Canada, together with our partners, will continue to work to promote freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law throughout the region and the world.

"Building on last year’s meeting in Gatineau, Quebec, during Canada’s G-8 presidency, I will also work with G-8 ministers to ensure our continued action on key priorities. Our fight against international terrorism and our commitment to nuclear non-proliferation remain the key to global peace and security. Together, we will work to set the stage for the upcoming G-8 leaders’ summit in Deauville, France, May 26 and 27, 2011."
