Minister Cannon to Visit Egypt

Minister to make important announcement in Cairo

(No. 104 – March 15, 2011 – 5:15 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will travel to Cairo on March 16, 2011. This visit follows the G-8 foreign ministers’ meeting in Paris, where ministers discussed a comprehensive response to the situation in the Middle East and North Africa.

"Our government encourages all parties to move forward with a peaceful and orderly democratic reform process," said Minister Cannon. "This process should include free and fair elections resulting in a new government that respects human rights and the rule of law."

During this visit, Minister Cannon will meet with members of Egypt’s new cabinet, as well as with reformers and Arab League officials.

This trip represents the first high-level Canadian government visit to Egypt since unrest broke out in the country at the end of January.

"We continue to watch developments closely and stand ready to help Egypt build a brighter future for its people," said Minister Cannon.
