Statement by Minister Cannon Following Death of Warren Christopher

(No. 111 – March 19, 2011 – 4 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement following the death of former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher:

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to offer my most sincere condolences to Warren Christopher’s family and friends and to the American people. Mr. Christopher will be remembered for his outstanding contributions to international relations.

"Canada worked with Mr. Christopher during the 1980 Iran hostage crisis, and again while he was Secretary of State in the 1990s to help find solutions to the conflicts in the Balkans and in the Middle East. Canada also worked with Mr. Christopher to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and to promote NAFTA and NORAD.

"Mr. Christopher was a trusted friend of Canada. We valued his cooperation with us on the many issues that brought Canada and United States together to promote our common values in a world marked by conflict and uncertainty."
