(No. 115 - March 21, 2011 - 7:40 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, congratulates the people of Haiti on their participation in the country’s second round of presidential and legislative elections, held March 20, 2011:
"We congratulate the people of Haiti, who exercised their fundamental democratic right to choose who will govern their country and represent them on the world stage.
"We also congratulate the Haitian authorities and people on the smooth conduct of these elections, despite some unfortunate incidents.
"Canada will continue to assist the Government of Haiti in its efforts to build democratic and effective governing institutions. Governance, as well as reconstruction and security, will remain a key focus for Canada’s assistance in delivering tangible results in Haiti. As I have said before, the international community alone cannot rebuild Haiti. As Canada has consistently stated time and again, political stability can only be achieved by Haitians themselves through the democratic election of an efficient, honest and responsible government to lead the people through the next critical stage of recovery and reconstruction."
