Public Safety Minister Vic Toews Represents Canada at Paraguayan Bicentennial Celebrations

(No. 133 - May 15, 2011 - 9:00 a.m. ET) The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, attended celebrations in Asunción on May 14, 2011, marking the bicentennial of Paraguay’s independence. Minister Toews, who was born in Filadelfia, Paraguay, conveyed Canada’s congratulations to the people of Paraguay on behalf of all Canadians as they marked this significant milestone in their country’s history.

"I am very pleased to bring congratulations on behalf of all Canadians on this significant occasion in Paraguay’s history," said Minister Toews. "As a Canadian born in Paraguay, and as a person of Mennonite heritage, I am greatly humbled by the opportunity to convey Canada’s support for continued strengthened relations between both countries."

Canada values its relationship with Paraguay, a relationship that is growing stronger through cooperation in many areas of mutual interest. Canada is pleased to collaborate in international peacekeeping with Paraguay, in particular through participation in MINUSTAH, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

Canada and Paraguay enjoy warm relations and meet regularly to discuss bilateral, multilateral and regional issues. The two countries also enjoy academic ties. Links between the two countries include Paraguay’s Mennonite community, which is 30,000 strong and includes 9,000 members with Canadian citizenship.

In addition to attending bicentennial celebrations, Minister Toews met with Paraguay’s Minister of the Interior, Rafael Filizzola.
