Canada Welcomes Signing of Agreement That Allows Honduras to Rejoin the Organization of American States

(No. 140 - May 23, 2011 - 11 p.m. ET) The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), today issued the following statement:

"Canada welcomes the signing of the Cartagena Agreement and looks forward to Honduras rejoining the Organization of American States.

"We commend the governments of Colombia and Venezuela for the initiatives and efforts they undertook to produce this agreement.

"We hope that the agreement reached by Honduran president Porfirio Lobo and former Honduran president Jose Manuel Zelaya will contribute to national reconciliation.

"Canada has always supported diplomacy and dialogue over force. This agreement is an example of the benefits that can result from such an approach."
