Statement by Minister Baird on Situation in Yemen
(No. 144 - May 26, 2011 - 6:45 p.m. ET) John Baird, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, today issued the following statement urging the President of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to follow through on his previous commitment to leave power:
"Canada is concerned by the recent upsurge in violence in Yemen. We urge President Saleh and his supporters to step down to allow for a peaceful and democratic transition to occur. That is what’s needed now to stabilize the situation and to allow Yemen to move forward.
"Canada remains concerned about the impact the events of recent weeks have had on civilians and calls on all parties to ensure those in need of assistance have safe and unhindered access to humanitarian supplies.
"We urge all sides to work toward a transition to a democracy with respect for human rights at its core. Such a transition would effectively promote the stability and unity of Yemen.
"We continue to advise against all travel to Yemen and strongly urge Canadians in Yemen to leave the country now, if it is safe for them to do so, while commercial means are still available."
