Parliamentary Secretary Obhrai to Represent Canada at Nigeria’s Presidential Inauguration

(No. 148 - May 27, 2011 - 9 p.m. ET) John Baird, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, today announced that Parliamentary Secretary Deepak Obhrai will represent Canada at the inauguration of Goodluck Jonathan as president of Nigeria in Abuja on May 29, 2011.

The April 2011 elections, including National Assembly, presidential and state-level elections, were welcomed by international and domestic observers as the most credible elections since the end of military rule in 1999.

"These elections are widely considered to be a reflection of the democratic will of the Nigerian people," said Minister Baird. "They demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law—values shared by Canada."

"We will continue to stand by the Nigerian people in this new phase in Nigeria’s democratic development," added the Minister. "Canada is fully committed to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria."
