(No. 184 - June 28, 2011 - 1:50 p.m. ET) John Baird, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, today issued the following statement after his meeting in Rome with Franco Frattini, Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs:
"Minister Frattini and I had a positive and productive first meeting.
"We discussed the situation in Libya and agreed that the international community must continue to support the democratic aspirations of the Libyan people through engagement with the National Transitional Council in Benghazi.
"I thanked Minister Frattini for Italy’s hosting of Canadian Forces members engaged in support of NATO Operation Unified Protector. I also reiterated Canada’s gratitude for the vital assistance Italy provided in evacuating Canadians from Libya earlier this year.
"Canada’s relationship with Italy at all levels is special and enduring. History has made us close allies. Growing cooperation—especially in the innovative fields of science, technology, and research and development—will ensure that the ties that bind our two countries will only grow stronger."
