Minister of State Ablonczy Meets with Consular Stakeholders in Edmonton

(No. 238 - August 18, 2011 - 4:10 p.m. ET) The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), was in Edmonton today to meet with consular stakeholders.

"Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada has a range of information and services available for Canadians, all designed to help ensure their personal safety and security while working, living or travelling internationally," said Minister of State Ablonczy. "Expanding and reinforcing solid partnerships with stakeholders is vital for consular information to reach more Canadians."

While in Edmonton, Minister of State Ablonczy met with representatives from the Alberta Motor Association, the Regent Energy Group, the University of Alberta International - Education Abroad Program, the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Association and the Canadian Council on Africa.

"In my meetings with Canadian companies that have operations abroad, I reiterated the importance for these companies to subscribe to Travel Reports and Warnings," added Minister of State Ablonczy. "I also invited their managers to contact Canadian embassies and consulates in countries where they have a presence to discuss emergency-planning measures."

Minister of State Ablonczy also encouraged companies to invite their employees travelling abroad to visit the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada Consular Services website ( to obtain up-to-date consular information and specialized publications, as well as to register prior to departure. The Registration of Canadians Abroad service provides a means by which the Government of Canada can contact and assist Canadians in case of an emergency.
