Canada Continues to Urge Peaceful Transition in Yemen
(No. 274 - September 23, 2011 - 5 p.m. ET) Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement regarding the return of President Ali Abdullah Saleh to Yemen:
“Canada strongly urges President Saleh to step down and for him and his supporters to allow a peaceful democratic transition to take place, one that respects freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“We condemn the use of violence against peaceful protestors that has killed over 100 people in Sanaa in the past week. Canada calls on the Government of Yemen and its armed factions to stop using excessive force and to take immediate steps to prevent any further violence.
“The people of Yemen deserve more from their government.
“Canada will continue to work with our international allies to support the courageous efforts of the Yemeni people in their quest for a brighter future.”
