(No. 314 - October 21, 2011) Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“As we mark the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, on October 23, we remember the thousands of Hungarians who fought for an end to Communist rule, and we honour those who gave their lives fighting for freedom.
“Canada is proud to have welcomed more than 37,000 Hungarian refugees in the months after the Revolution. Last year, our government designated their arrival as a national historic event.
“Canada and Hungary enjoy excellent relations today, and we join all Hungarians in recognizing this day of commemoration.
“Our government also recognizes the efforts of those involved in the establishment in the National Capital Region of a memorial to the victims of totalitarian communism.”
