Statement by Minister of State Ablonczy on Release of Canadian Family from Prison in Saudi Arabia

(No. 325 - November 1, 2011 - 8:15 p.m. ET) The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), today made the following statement welcoming the release of Majeed Uddin Ahmed and his family from prison in Saudi Arabia:

“We are very pleased that the Ahmed family has been released from detention in Saudi Arabia.

“I extend my sincere appreciation to our Canadian officials, in Ottawa and at our embassy in Saudi Arabia, who worked hard to advance the Ahmed family’s case and to provide assistance and support to them as well as their family in Canada. Our government will continue to provide consular assistance to the Ahmed family and will help facilitate their travel arrangements.

“We thank the officials in Saudi Arabia for their cooperation on this case.”
