Canada and El Salvador Find Innovative Ways to Support Youth at Risk

(No. 339 - November 9, 2011 - 2 p.m. ET) The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), will participate in a special Canada-El Salvador event including a performance by the EsArtes/Stratford/CUSO International project, in celebration of the Inter-American Year of Culture.

“This event is a perfect way to celebrate the Inter-American Year of Culture, a recognition by the Organization of American States of the central role that culture plays in the economic, social and human development of all communities in the hemisphere,” said Minister of State Ablonczy. “It is also an excellent way to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and El Salvador.”

EsArtes is a theatre arts school that receives volunteer support from master technicians and a professional director from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. The school provides young people in Suchitoto, El Salvador, with the opportunity not only to study theatre arts, but also to learn skills that will serve them throughout their lives, to build friendships and to strengthen their community.

“The EsArtes/Stratford/CUSO International project in Suchitoto was born of the idea that the arts can help generate economic, social and human development; it can build safer and healthier communities, teach life skills and inspire creativity,” added Minister of State Ablonczy. “I know this worthwhile project is making a difference in the lives of the youth of Suchitoto.”
