Kenneth Macartney becomes Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden.

Kenneth Macartney (BA Honours [History], University of Victoria, 1982) joined the Department of External Affairs in 1982 as a foreign service officer. From 1984 to 1987, Mr. Macartney served at the Canadian embassy in Oslo. From 1987 to 1990, he supported Canada’s anti-apartheid efforts as a member of the Southern Africa Task Force. He subsequently studied Japanese in Yokohama and then served as counsellor at the Canadian embassy in Tokyo until 1996. From 1996 to 2001, Mr. Macartney was director of the Environmental Relations Division. From 2002 to 2005, he was counsellor at the Canadian embassy in Stockholm. From 2005 to 2009, he was deputy high commissioner at Canada’s high commission in New Delhi. Since 2009, Mr. Macartney has been director general for the South, Southeast Asia and Oceania Bureau. He is married to Susan and has two children, Andrew and Emma. Mr. Macartney succeeds Alexandra Volkoff.
