May 27, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the statement by the UN Security Council condemning the Houla massacre, which has—yet again—demonstrated the illegitimate Assad regime’s appalling disregard for human life.
“This weekend’s shocking attack merits the Security Council’s condemnation and much more. We call on the Council to take stronger diplomatic action.
“There must be repercussions for Assad’s refusal to implement the Security Council-endorsed Annan Peace Plan.
“We call on all Security Council members to come together and adopt strong measures—including economic sanctions—against the Syrian regime, to ensure that it fulfills its commitments and immediately stops the senseless slaughter of its own people.”
