Canada Concerned by Violence in Democratic Republic of Congo
May 4, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada is deeply concerned by the increasing instability in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The rapidly rising number of displaced persons and refugees is a troubling trend and needs to be addressed immediately by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“We are also especially concerned by the possibility of sexual violence, including the use of rape as a weapon of war, in an area where this type of violation has been occurring all too frequently.
“We condemn these disgusting acts of violence and call on all parties to respect human rights and human dignity.
“Canada urges the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to ensure the protection of human rights is central in their daily deliberations.”
