Canada Welcomes Transfer of Power in Libya
August 9, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the official transfer of power from the National Transitional Council to the democratically elected General National Congress.
“This represents another milestone in Libya’s remarkable transition and is a testament to the determination of the Libyan people to realize a better, brighter future.
“Canada looks forward to the election of a new leader for the Congress as well as the appointment of a new prime minister and cabinet.
“We commend the members of the Transitional Council for their work in drafting the road map for Libya’s democratic transition, for guiding Libya through the transitional stage and for delivering on their commitment to relinquish power to the elected national assembly.
“Although Libya’s transition marks one of the first steps in a long road to peace and stability, the Libyan people can rest assured they have a friend and a willing partner in Canada.”
