September 14, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the election of Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur in Libya.
“Canada welcomes the progress that Libya has made in its transition to democracy and remains committed to working with the people of Libya in their journey to build a more just and democratic society based on the rule of law and respect for human rights.
“The recent tragic attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi is indicative of the security challenges facing the new prime minister and the Government of Libya.
“Progress on the political transition is an important component in the rebuilding of a peaceful and secure Libyan society. Canada will continue to work with Libya in this regard.”
