September 27, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the agreement signed today between Sudan and South Sudan. We commend the efforts of African Union mediators and the spirit of compromise shown by both parties. Fully implementing this agreement will ensure that the people of the two countries can enjoy the dividends of peace.
“We urge swift resolution of all outstanding issues. A sustainable solution to the status of Abyei, territory claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan, must be found. Direct talks must take place to end the conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Humanitarian assistance must immediately start flowing to those affected by the conflict in Sudan’s border areas. Depriving civilians of life-saving humanitarian assistance is unacceptable.
“Canada’s contribution to peace in Sudan and South Sudan has involved Canadians from across our country and encompasses police, military, humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. We want to see the benefits of this agreement reach the people of Sudan and South Sudan, and this will require that leaders put words into action.”
