October 19, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today made the following statement:
“I am shocked and deeply troubled by the car bomb attack in Beirut today, which claimed the lives of several civilians.
“Brigadier-General Wissam al-Hassan, who was also killed in the attack, played a key role in the investigation of former prime minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination and in the arrest of prominent pro-Syrian politician Michel Samaha.
“Canada strongly condemns this cowardly act of terrorism and supports efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those killed, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured.
“Canada is a strong supporter of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and its efforts to render justice for acts of terrorism in Lebanon, including the Hariri assassination and related cases.”
