Baird Welcomes Release of Burmese Political Prisoners
November 22, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement on the recent release of political prisoners in Burma:
“Canada welcomes reports that a number of political prisoners have been released by the Burmese authorities. This follows previous releases that have occurred over the past several months.
“I also welcome the government’s stated commitment to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to resume prisoner visits. We hope that Burmese authorities will provide them with full and unhindered access.
“We still have concerns that some political prisoners remain behind bars. We urge the Burmese government to undertake a full and transparent review to ensure that all such prisoners are quickly and unconditionally released.
“Canada continues to be encouraged by the changes taking place in Burma and it is our hope that the Burmese government will take further steps to ensure freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law for all.”
