Canada Concerned by Deadly Violence in Burma

March 22, 2013 - Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador to the Office of Religious Freedom, today issued the following statement:

“Canada is concerned by recent reports of deadly violence targeting Muslims in Meiktila, Burma.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sympathies to the families affected by these acts of violence. Canada calls for immediate calm and urges Burmese authorities to ensure that the rights and safety of all residents are protected and to fully investigate and prosecute those responsible for these acts.

“Long-term peace and prosperity in Burma will require dialogue and cooperation between all groups, including ethnic and religious minorities. It is of upmost importance that people of every country have the freedom to practise their religion without fear of violence and persecution.

“Canada will continue to work with the people of Burma and the international community to address the ongoing democracy and human rights challenges in Burma.

“Canada has committed to opening an embassy in Yangon. Through this mission, Canadian officials will continue to express the need for the respect of human rights, democracy and religious freedoms and will work with Burmese officials to realize these freedoms.”
