Baird Visits Qatar

April 3, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“I thank Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani for their commitment to strengthening relations between our two countries.

“Trade between Canada and Qatar is expected to expand significantly over the coming years as Qatar’s economy continues to grow. I was pleased to meet with private sector business leaders to hear first-hand where opportunities lie.

“While our relations have traditionally been rooted in commercial links, Canada has stepped up its political engagement with the Qatari leadership in recent years as Qatar has assumed a growing role in regional and world affairs.

“Discussions today centred on the crisis in Syria and regional security issues, including the threat posed by the regime in Tehran. I thank our hosts for sharing their perspectives as we continue to work toward greater prosperity and security for both our countries.”
