Canada Welcomes Kosovo-Serbia Accord

April 20, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada welcomes the agreement between Serbia and Kosovo to normalize relations between the two countries. It is a significant step forward. It is the result of compromise and courage by both sides.

“More than two decades after bloody strife erupted in the Western Balkans, this deal paves the way for greater economic cooperation and long-term growth for the people of both countries and the broader region.

“Canada has contributed mightily to bring freedom and security to the Balkans, with 20 Canadians making the ultimate sacrifice. Their memory is well served by lasting peace in Europe. We commend the efforts of all who contribute to that.”

Minister Baird will be discussing this agreement when he meets his North Atlantic Treaty Organization counterparts in Brussels early next week.
