Canada Welcomes Afghan Security Transition
June 19, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“The transfer of security responsibility to Afghan forces is an important milestone in what has been a long and difficult journey.
“While Canada will work with the Afghan government to help with this transition, it is up to Afghans to ensure greater transparency, accountability, good governance and basic rights for all in their country.
“In the face of such adversity, the determination of the Afghan people can be looked at as a source of great strength. On the path to freedom and prosperity in Afghanistan, Canada stands with those who seek to build this better future.
“Canada remains committed to supporting this transition, including through our contribution to the NATO Training Mission—Afghanistan (NTM-A) until March 2014. We also welcome NATO’s commitment to the establishment of a post-2014 training mission, which will be essential in continuing to foster capable and professional Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF). To that end, Canada has committed to providing $330 million between 2015 and 2017 to sustain the ANSF.”
