Baird Welcomes EU Decision to List Hezbollah as Terrorist Entity

July 22, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada welcomes the European Union’s courageous decision to list the military wing of Hezbollah as a terrorist entity.

“The designation made by all 28 member states of the EU exposes Hezbollah for what it is: a terrorist group.

“Hezbollah’s foiled plot in Cyprus and its tragic bombing of a tourist bus in Bulgaria last year are but two examples of Hezbollah’s growing global reach. It has long played a destabilizing role around the world, and in close partnership with the regressive clerical dictatorship of Iran actively assists Assad in the brutal murder of countless civilians in Syria.”

Canada listed Hezbollah as a terrorist entity under our Criminal Code in December 2002. We remain committed to stability in Lebanon and to working with our partners to promote lasting peace and prosperity.
