Third Canada-Indonesia Bilateral Consultative Forum

Indonesian Foreign Minister Dr. R. M. Marty M. Natalegawa and Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird met at Willson House on 23 August 2013 for the Ministerial Meeting of the 3rd Bilateral Consultative Forum between the Republic of Indonesia and Canada.
Minister Natalegawa and Minister Baird held detailed discussions on bilateral issues and on regional and international topics of mutual interest. The ministers agreed on the imperative to deepen bilateral engagement by focusing on increasing prosperity through trade, investment and economic cooperation, through political and security cooperation, and through collaboration on social, education, cultural and people-to-people contacts. The two ministers reiterated their Governments’ mutual respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Minister Baird and Minister Natalegawa reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to advancing human rights and democratic development, enhancing mutual understanding, as well as developing partnerships on non-discrimination, religious freedom, rights of women and girls, and other human rights issues.
The two ministers acknowledged the importance of bilateral trade and of maintaining an open and stable investment environment, as well as highlighting their commitment to trade liberalization and open markets. In particular, the ministers considered means to enhance Canada-Indonesia commercial dialogue, including in the areas of agriculture, forestry, labour, natural resources and air transportation. They agreed on the priority that both governments place on sustainable economic growth and development with equity.
In the area of security cooperation, the ministers witnessed and welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada and the Indonesian National Agency for Counter-Terrorism on Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building Programming, which will increase opportunities for mutual cooperation and training. The ministers welcomed enhanced engagement of Indonesia and Canada on peace support operations and humanitarian crises.
Minister Natalegawa and Minister Baird agreed on the importance of sustaining their dialogue on global and regional issues. They committed to the successful conclusion of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit in October 2013 and the WTO Ministerial Meeting in December 2013, to be held in Bali, Indonesia. The ministers also recalled previous cooperation between Indonesia and Canada with regard to regional security issues, including the South China Sea workshops. The two ministers agreed to further engage policy planning officials in order to identify opportunities for bilateral cooperation. Acknowledging the importance of interfaith dialogue, both ministers agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in this field.
The ministers underlined the important role played by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in securing long-term prosperity and security. Indonesia welcomed Canada’s enhanced engagement with ASEAN that Canada announced on 1 July 2013 in Brunei Darussalam and its recognition of the importance of the East Asia Summit process.
The two sides will hold the next meeting in Indonesia in 2014.
