Baird to Attend APEC Ministerial Meeting

October 3, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird will attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting, an annual event for trade and foreign ministers. The meeting will take place in Nusa Dua, Indonesia, from October 4 to 5, 2013, immediately prior to the annual APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which Prime Minister Stephen Harper will attend.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for Canada to engage with other APEC economies to advance open and transparent markets, as well as the free movement of information and capital in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Canada’s prosperity is directly linked to reaching beyond our borders for economic opportunities that serve to increase Canada’s trade and investment,” said Baird.

“Trade has long been a powerful engine for Canada’s economy. It is even more so in these globally challenging economic times. APEC provides a forum to actively pursue our interests through regional and bilateral trade and investment liberalization.”

On the margins of the APEC meeting, Baird will hold bilateral meetings with a number of his counterparts from the Asia-Pacific region.

Representing more than 50 percent of global GDP and with a membership that includes four of Canada’s top five trading partners, APEC plays an important role in helping to advance Canada’s commercial, development and security interests within the Asia-Pacific region.

Following the APEC meeting, Baird will travel to Malaysia, where he will join Prime Minister Harper on his bilateral visit.
