Canada Condemns Attack on Camp in Iraq

December 27, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Chris Alexander, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, today issued the following statement:

“Canada condemns yesterday’s rocket attack on Camp Hurriya, near Baghdad, which killed and injured residents of the camp.

“Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this deplorable violence. We wish a full recovery to the injured.

“The attack, the most recent in a series targeting Iraq-based camps housing Iranian exiles, is completely unacceptable. We call on the Government of Iraq to bring those responsible to justice.

“Canada will raise its concerns directly with Iraqi officials, urging the Government of Iraq to ensure the safety of residents.

“We appreciate the work of the UN Refugee Agency in its continued efforts to provide for the safety of camp residents and urge further cooperation with the Government of Iraq.”
