Canada Condemns Bomb Attack in Somalia

January 3, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today released the following statement:

“Canada strongly condemns the abhorrent attack on the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia. On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to express condolences to the families of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

“These acts will only strengthen our resolve to combat terrorism in all its forms. We stand with the Somali people in the face of such reckless acts, and commit to continue our work to strengthen regional security.”

In October 2013, Canada announced a contribution of $5 million to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM); this is in addition to the $11 million provided since 2010 for AMISOM. Canada has also contributed more than $1.5 million toward strengthening law enforcement in the Horn and East Africa since 2011.
