Canada Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement in South Sudan

January 24, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada welcomes the cessation of hostilities agreement signed between the Government of South Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition.

“Negotiators worked tirelessly to achieve this agreement and are to be commended. We now call on all parties to the conflict to respect the agreement. Further acts of violence would be a betrayal of the citizens of South Sudan.

“Canada reiterates its support for the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan and the neutral role it plays. We call on all parties to facilitate its work and to provide unhindered access to humanitarian workers.

“While this agreement is an important first step in ending the violence, enduring peace will only result from a process that demands justice, accountability and an end to ethnic hostilities.”
