Canada to Provide More Medical Supplies to Ukrainians

February 18, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“The events in Kyiv today have shaken a nation, rattled by months of unrest. Canada unequivocally condemns the violence that has led to the deaths of scores of Ukrainians.

“Canada is today announcing further assistance to provide medical care for Ukrainian activists through a contribution to a Ukrainian non-governmental organization, including vital supplies, first aid kits and training.

“This urgent medical relief will ensure that treatment is provided to the courageous activists injured while speaking out peacefully in support of democracy.

“I will also be consulting our allies and like-minded nations to build a coordinated path forward in the coming days. All options remain available, including through the deployment of targeted sanctions against those responsible.

“All sides must show restraint and cease all acts of violence immediately. We will bear witness to all acts of violence and repression today, and those responsible will be held to account.

“The democratic aspirations of the Ukrainian people can and will be met through a political solution. Canada strongly supports the Ukrainian people in their fight for a free and democratic Ukraine.”
