Baird Strongly Condemns North Korea’s Reckless Missile Launch

March 28, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement concerning the launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea in the early hours of March 26 (local time):

“Canada unequivocally condemns North Korea’s belligerent actions, which are in wilful defiance of its international obligations and only serve to heighten tensions on the Korean peninsula.

“The actions of the Kim regime are a grave threat to regional and global security. They come as the North Korean people struggle for even the most basic necessities.

“The current path of the regime will only result in further isolation. North Korea continually scorns its international obligations, while ignoring the fundamental human rights of its people, who continue to suffer unimaginable horrors under this dictatorship.

“Canada’s sanctions on North Korea are among the toughest in the world, and we will continue to work with our international partners to pursue further appropriate actions.”
