Diplomatic Appointment

March 28, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced the following diplomatic appointment:

Shawn Steil becomes Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Biographical Note

Shawn Steil (BA [Anthropology and Environmental Science], McGill University, 1997; MEDes, University of Calgary, 2004) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 2002 as a desk officer for security sector reform in the Regional Security and Peacekeeping Division. In Ottawa, he has also held the position of deputy director of the Greater China Division. Abroad, Mr. Steil held back-to-back postings in China from 2004 to 2009. He worked first in Beijing as second secretary and executive assistant to the ambassador. In his second posting in China, Mr. Steil was consul and senior trade commissioner in Chongqing. Mr. Steil is currently consul and senior trade commissioner in Istanbul, Turkey. He is accompanied by his wife, Jean Glaister Steil, and their two children, Susannah and Theodore. Mr.Steil replaces Stephen Millar.
