Canada Offers Condolences After Ferry Capsizes in South Korea

April 16, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“I was deeply saddened by news of the sinking of a ferry carrying more than 450 people, mostly high school students, off South Korea’s coast.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those lost in this tragic accident and my wishes for a prompt recovery to all those injured.

“They are all in our thoughts and prayers, along with the people of South Korea, as they face this terrible tragedy.”

Canadian officials are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and stand ready to provide consular assistance as required during this difficult time.
