Canada Congratulates Iraqi Voters

April 30, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today released the following statement congratulating the people of Iraq as they elected the 2014 Council of Representatives in the first federal election fully administered by the Iraqis:

“Canada applauds the Iraqi people for demonstrating their courage and commitment to a peaceful and democratic state by exercising their fundamental democratic right to vote.

“We strongly condemn the use of violence and intimidation by elements opposed to Iraqi democracy. On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the victims of the attacks that have taken place in recent days and weeks.

“Canada calls on the Independent High Electoral Commission to ensure full transparency during the counting and validation process in the days ahead.

“I also encourage all candidates to serve as an inspiration to Iraqis and to support the peaceful transition of power once the results are announced.

“Canada stands firmly with Iraq’s people and government as they work together to advance democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

“In support of Iraq’s democracy, Canada is proud to have hosted out-of-country voting to enable members of Canada’s Iraqi community to exercise their right to vote in this election, and to deploy a team of official poll monitors to Iraq on election day.”
