Canada Concerned by Martial Law in Thailand

May 20, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued the following statement today following the Royal Thai Army’s declaration of martial law:

“Canada notes the decision early this morning by the Royal Thai Army to institute martial law in Thailand, reportedly in order to safeguard public order rather than to overturn elected authorities via a coup. We expect the Army to honour its commitment to ensure this is a temporary action only and that Thailand’s constitution and democratic institutions and practices will be respected.

“Canada remains deeply concerned by the political crisis in Thailand and calls again on all parties to work together to resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue while respecting democratic principles and the rule of law.”
