Baird to Return to Latin America and Participate in OAS General Assembly

May 31, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced he will travel to Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Ecuador this week.

“Since 2007, our government has made the Americas a foreign policy priority, with the vision of a more prosperous, secure and democratic hemisphere,” said Baird. “This visit will advance Canada’s engagement in the Americas by reinforcing regional cooperation, advancing economic opportunities, promoting Canadian values and strengthening relationships.”

Baird will lead Canada’s delegation at the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), taking place in Asunción, Paraguay, from June 3 to 5. He will make an address to the General Assembly to highlight priority issues for Canada and the region, such as democracy and human rights.

Baird will also take the opportunity to discuss with his counterparts the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American games, which will be held in Toronto.

Canada’s Strategy for Engagement in the Americas focuses on increasing mutual economic opportunity, addressing insecurity and strengthening institutions, and fostering lasting relationships.

Canada has invested more than $4.6-billion worth of international assistance in the Americas since 2007. These investments are showcased through Panorama, a new interactive, web-based mapping tool and database.
